Tales of Misogyny and Sexism

Updated: May 8, 2018

"We all know a woman's place is in the home, cooking a man a delicious meal..." No, not Mr W’s opinion; well at least not one that he would ever dare to voice out loud! I have been going through old adverts from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Don’t get me wrong, I know that sexism is a serious business, but my word I found them funny! You know that awful urge you get to laugh when you are at a funeral? Well that is how I felt looking through them, they were hilariously inappropriate!

Sexist and misogynistic, they consistently portrayed women as weak; subservient; domesticated and feeble minded! We might have come a long way since then, but we’ve still

got a way to go if we are going to achieve gender equality and end the imbalance of power. The ‘Time’s Up’ campaign illustrates just how much there is to do.

So how did I come to be trawling through such horrors as ‘Blow in her face and she will follow you anywhere!’? Well Mr W brought back a lovely old Pepsi advert from a pub strip out he did last week. If was discovered sticky and black with age under the lino, along with some police evidence bags (but that’s another story!) so I have been trying to date it. I started by trying to age the bottle in the advert, then took a look at Pepsi slogan’s through the 20th century. I was too easily distracted so I still don’t have a date but I have had fun researching it. Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to start cooking dinner, get the kids into bed and put on my face, before Mr W gets home and expects his Martini to be ready!
